Boston "bomb scare" overreaction

Posted on Feb 1st, 2007 by Risto : Peace Voyager Risto
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I think that the Boston gov't and various news agencies are overreacting to this creative media blitz. I wish Miami was included... but not this time. Seattle, L.A., Austin, Atlanta, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Chicago, Portland and NYC didn't overreact to the degree that Boston did. I think that once the officials realized what it was (not bombs), that they felt stupid, and their response had to be furious, so they didn't look so dumb.
A Boston city commissioners response was that some of the 9/11 flights had originated there, so they're tense. NYC was a 9/11 target and they were cool about this occurance. Ok, so one officer probably saw some wires and batteries and immediately thought "bomb=terrorists", and without hesitation requested deployment by the Bomb Squad to investigate. Street traffic, water traffic and subway trains were all halted, and they need to justify their over-reaction with criminal proceedings on the accused with placing a hoax device and disorderly conduct.
That's all they could come up with::: disorderly conduct and placing a hoax device. Their intent was not placing a hoax device, it's a new marketing tactic... which now has done incredibly well for Cartoon Network... maybe they won't repeat this tactic, but this one turned out to be way more visible than what they planned for.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
FROM FOX NEWS::: Peter Berdovsky, 27, and Sean Stevens, 28, ignored a barrage of reporters' questions about their role in the botched scheme and talked, instead, about mohawks, dreadlocks, Beatle cuts and Afros as their attorney, Michael Rich, stood by with an incredulous look on his face.
Meanwhile, an outraged Boston Mayor Tom Menino demanded restitution of at least $750,000 to compensate the city for police costs, while the state's attorney said he planned to go forward with criminal charges.
Berdovsky and Stevens were arrested Wednesday after officials found 38 blinking electronic signs promoting the Cartoon Network TV show "Aqua Teen Hunger Force" on bridges and other high-profile spots across the city, prompting the closing of a highway and the deployment of bomb squads.

"I feel like my hair is pretty perfect but altogether I want to redirect this to the haircuts of the '70s," Berdovsky said, ignoring reporters' shouts.
"I really like the one where the hair curls around to the back," Stevens replied.
"Oh yeah, that one’s so hot," Berdovsky then responded.
Frustrated reporters, trying to get the pair to respond to serious questions about the incident that at one point involved the participation of the FBI and Department of Homeland Security, finally tossed a question that gave one of them cause to reflect.
When asked whether they were afraid their hair might be cut if they are sent to prison, Berdovsky stopped his rant and answered, "Whatever happens I feel that my hair is safe at the moment."
A district court judge, meanwhile, ordered the two men held on bond for allegedly placing electronic advertising devices around the city, stirring fears of terrorism and shutting down parts of Boston.
They were held on $2,500 cash bond each after they pleaded not guilty to placing a hoax device and disorderly conduct.
"It's clear the intent was to get attention by causing fear and unrest that there was a bomb in that location," Assistant Attorney General John Grossman said at their arraignment.
The surreal series is about a talking milkshake, a box of fries and a meatball. The network is a division of Turner Broadcasting Systems Inc.
The 1-foot tall signs, which were lit up at night, resembled a circuit board, with protruding wires and batteries. Most depicted a boxy, cartoon character giving passersby the finger — a more obvious sight when darkness fell.
"It is outrageous, in a post 9/11 world, that a company would use this type of marketing scheme," Menino said Wednesday. "I am prepared to take any and all legal action against Turner Broadcasting and its affiliates for any and all expenses incurred during the response to today's incidents."
Berdovsky, an artist, told The Boston Globe he was hired by a marketing company and said he was "kind of freaked out" by the furor.
"I find it kind of ridiculous that they're making these statements on TV that we must not be safe from terrorism, because they were up there for three weeks and no one noticed. It's pretty commonsensical to look at them and say this is a piece of art and installation," he said.
While Boston officials were livid, fans of the show mocked authorities for what they called an overreaction.
About a dozen fans gathered outside Charlestown District Court on Thursday morning with signs saying "1-31-07 Never Forget" and "Free Peter."
"We're the laughing stock," said Tracy O'Connor, 34.
"It's almost too easy to be a terrorist these days," said Jennifer Mason, 26. "You stick a box on a corner and you can shut down a city."
O'Connor said there's nothing wrong with being vigilant, but said she said it was ridiculous to shut down a city "when anyone under the age of 35 knew this was a joke the second they saw it."
Authorities vowed to hold Turner accountable for what Menino said was "corporate greed," that led to at least $750,000 in police costs.
As soon as Turner realized the Boston problem around 5 p.m., it said, law enforcement officials were told of their locations in 10 cities where it said the devices had been placed for two to three weeks: Boston, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta, Seattle, Portland, Ore., Austin, Texas, San Francisco and Philadelphia.
"We apologize to the citizens of Boston that part of a marketing campaign was mistaken for a public danger," said Phil Kent, chairman of Turner, a division of Time Warner Inc.
Kent said the marketing company that placed the signs, Interference Inc., was ordered to remove them immediately.
Interference had no comment. A woman who answered the phone at the New York-based firm's offices Wednesday afternoon said the firm's CEO was out of town and would not be able to comment until Thursday.
Messages seeking additional comment from the Atlanta-based Cartoon Network were left with several publicists.
A voice mail box for Berdovsky was full Wednesday night. The Associated Press was unable to find whether Stevens had a lawyer.
Authorities are investigating whether Turner or other companies should be criminally charged, Attorney General Martha Coakley said. "We're not going to let this go without looking at the further roots of how this happened to cause the panic in this city," Coakley said.
In Seattle and several suburbs, the removal of the signs was low-key. "We haven't had any calls to 911 regarding this," Seattle police spokesman Sean Whitcomb said Wednesday.
Police in Philadelphia said they believed their city had 56 devices.
The New York Police Department removed 41 of the devices — 38 in Manhattan and three in Brooklyn, according to spokesman Paul Browne. The NYPD had not received any complaints. But when it became aware of the situation, it contacted Cartoon Network, which provided the locations so the devices could be removed.
"Aqua Teen Hunger Force" is a cartoon with a cultish following that airs as part of a block of programs for adults on the Cartoon Network. A feature length film based on the show is slated for release March 23.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Full Moon

Nice: DharmaSpace
Dear friends, Tonight begins this month's full moon. Yes, some calendars are putting it at tomorrow, but it seems that it starts full close to midnight tonight and remains so through tomorrow (Friday). So two days to take advantage of its influence! Lucky you. It is explained in Tibetan astrology that Full and New moons are particularly good times to do spiritual practices (meditation, etc.) due to the influence of the moon. It seems to be a spiritual booster in some way. For evidence of this one need look no further than Buddha Shakyamuni's life. All of the major events of his life took place on Full Moon days. This included his Awakening under the Bodhi Tree that fateful night. Why then? Did the Full Moon give him that extra push to break through to the other shore? In any case, DharmaSpace advises extra effort in your practices during this period. Sarva Mangalam!, DharmaSpace

exxon reported profits of $39.5 billion dollars last year

Posted on Feb 1st, 2007 by Risto : Peace Voyager Risto
from moby on MySpace ::: exxon reported profits of $39.5 billion dollars on record earnings last year. and, fun fact, our tax dollars subsidize oil production here in the united states and abroad. exxon also receive billions in corporate welfare and subsidies. i mean, call me crazy, but shouldn’t a company that is making record profits be exempt from receiving subsidies and tax breaks? i know, i’m just a crazy lefty, but that seems like it would make sense, no? what if, and i know this might sound nuts, our government subsidised sustainable domestic energy production and stopped subsidising companies who increase our reliance upon foreign oil? ok, i’ll stop with the crazy talk now. Thanks Moby for speaking the Truth

On 13 February 2007 Mercury goes retrograde

Posted on Feb 2nd, 2007 by Risto : Peace Voyager Risto
. . . On 13 February 2007 (11:38pm Eastern/8:38pm Pacific time) Planet Mercury turns retrograde and returns to direct motion on 07 March 2007 (8:45pm Eastern/11:45pm Pacific time). Mercury represents the link between spirit and matter, between soul and personality. Mercury symbolizes the power of communication and intpretation: intelligence, reasoning capabilities and the ability to perceive relationships and gather facts. Mercury retrograde is a term that describes an orbital shift as it moves backward through an astrological sign. Mercury retrograde in Pisces is likely to disrupt communications with topics that cover our beliefs and religion, as well as music and the arts. Despite strong instinctual impulses to articulate abstract or profound subjects, Mercury retrograde in Pisces will leave us stuttering and tongue tied. A real test of everyone's patience occurs; this leaves us susceptible to arguments and confusion regarding spiritual development. While Mercury is retrograde in Aquarius (26 February thru 07 March), there may be a number of irritating miscommunications over technology related subjects or situations. At first it may be difficult to sit through everyone's excuses and misinformation, but eventually a logical explanation will emerge despite Mercury retrograde setbacks. Expect to repeat yourself more than once or twice, and to be persistent as well as patient. .......................................................................................................................................................... Mercurial qualities also include being adaptable, attentive, perceptive, clever, versatile, inconsistent, hypercritical, argumentative, sarcastic, cynical, excitable, impressionable, and nervous or prone to worry. Mercury narrates, talks, memorizes, debates, writes, argues, analyzes, studies, travels, sells, reflects, and expresses with the hands as well as the tongue. Mercury is neither of positive of negative polarity-- neither masculine nor feminine. Mercury rules all communications and is associated with speaking and writing, educational capacities and manual skills. Mercury is especially active in the versatile, talkative sign of Gemini, and its nature is stronger in analytical Virgo. . . .

Lights over Phoenix Arizona, 2007

Posted on Feb 9th, 2007 by Risto : Peace Voyager Risto
. •from The National Ledger.com• Arizona UFO or Military Flares? By Michael Amsterdam Feb 7, 2007 Phoenix, Arizona was all abuzz on Tuesday night when an array of lights appeared in the night sky southwest of the city. Telephone switchboards rang and e-mails flowed and many believed that the legendary 'Phoenix lights' had returned. In the first event, nearly ten years ago, nine bright orbs were spotted and filmed on March 13, 1997. During that night, several events filled the evening and several different sightings were reported all the way from Las Vegas to Tucson, Arizona. The evenings UFO sightings concluded with what was finally dubbed 'the Phoenix Lights.' Arizona UFO or Military Flares? So - did the lights return? Well, some kind of bright orbs were spotted by thousands of witnesses. But what exactly were they? Part of the reason that the Phoenix Lights drew such a buzz ten years ago was because the lights remained unexplained for so long. It was literally months before it was claimed that the lights that were filmed were military flares dropped by the Maryland National Guard. This time, the government was a bit quicker. Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor says there is a simple answer to the mystery -- military flares. "From what we were told, about a half dozen F-16s out of Luke AFB were operating at the range," Gregor said. "They were practicing ground attacks and that involves the discharge of flares." The FAA also reported Luke Air Force Base had six F-16's that were also out on the range practicing ground attacks. They were also using flares. ¡™£¢∞§¶•ªº–≠œ∑´®†¥¨ˆøπ“‘«åß∂ƒ©˙∆˚¬…æΩ≈ç√∫˜µ≤≥÷ Ok here's my take on it::: duh, these lights are not military related... the only thing the military has to do with this event is *coverup*. Formations for this duration and even alignment make it highly, highly unlikely that they're flares. Wind disturbances would have impact on the flares, affecting their vertical height and distance from one another. We know what this was... another alien visit, perhaps a followup visit. =-=--=-==-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-=-=-=-=-=-==-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= also reported on::: cbs4 news-Phoenix FoxNews search "flares"
