join me for Peace One Day

Posted on Sep 6th, 2007 by Risto : Peace Voyager Risto
On Friday 21 September it is the International Day of Peace recognized by the United Nations. The day is also known as Peace One Day and their official website is PeaceOneDay.org I'm holding the space for several Meditation for Peace Circle and everybody is invited. The locations will *definitely* be on South Beach, I was thinking somewhere in the shade on Lincoln Rd, also in Flamingo Park and maybe Lummus Park. Alongside the Atlantic Ocean *may* be too hot or too sunny, but I'm open to that, as well. If you have a specific time and/or place you'd like to suggest to me... I'm all ears. Peace & One Love, Risto =)

I'm a little bothered...

Posted on Sep 12th, 2007 by Risto : Peace Voyager Risto
Recently I viewed Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth and Leonardo DiCaprio's The 11th Hour. Good films that I'll definitely recommend, however I just need to express something that seemed to be lacking in both films. It is the diet of humans that also has a significant contribution to the decline of our Earth's environment. I lean towards being vegetarian, and I do try to avoid red meat (beef), but I do occasionally get off track, which I do admit I am part of the problem. The large herds of cattle raised for human consumption is a major contributor to the demise of our environment. Nearly half of all the water used in the United States goes to raising animals for food. It takes 5,000 gallons of water to produce 1 pound of meat, while growing 1 pound of wheat only requires 25 gallons. A totally vegetarian diet requires only 300 gallons of water per day, while a meat-eating diet requires more than 4,000 gallons of water per day. You save more water by not eating a pound of beef than you do by not showering for an entire year. --from goveg.com A recent report by the U.N.’s Food and Agriculture Organization reckons that at least eighteen per cent of the global-warming effect comes from livestock production. So with these glaring facts, I am puzzled of how & why the two films named atop this blog entry neglected to even touch upon these points of water misuse. Me being part of the solution::: • curtailing my consumption of beef; • using my skateboard or walking as my means of local transportation; • using public transportation for longer distances; • conserving water when showering, shaving, brushing my teeth, and washing dishes. I just needed to share these points because it's been on my mind since I'd seen those films. Thanks for listening =)

I'm forced to slow down

Today @ work as I was going down a flight of stairs I twisted my ankle pretty bad. Interestingly, in June, while hiking the Inka Trail, with 3 days of stone-steps climbing, I had absolutely no foot slippage (going up or down), but today on a 4 storey stairwell, I twisted my ankle, falling onto the ground. Ouch !!! This just forces me to take things slowly, and I understand that everything happens for a reason. I'm keeping ice on my ankle, keeping it elevated, trying to keep off of it (quite difficult for me), and applying Arnice Cream on it. I've not taken any sort of pain killer, although I do know the ibuprofin helps reduce swelling, the applied ice should do the same, without subjecting my body to medicines. If the pain becomes uncomfortable, I will take the over-the-counter ibuprofin, for pain (and at the same time it'll help reduce swelling).

Friday 21 September is Peace One Day

I am having several Meditations for Peace on Friday in Miami Beach. Here's the schedule:::

11 am Lincoln Road Circle (Where Euclid Ave dead-ends into Lincoln Road).

3 pm In Flamingo Park, meeting point::: Michigan Ave & 13 th Street... with parking nearby. Hopefully this will be under a nice, large shade tree. It *may* include a brief walking meditation, as well.

7 pm In Flamingo Park (same details as above)

Each meditation will be approximately 30 minutes to an hour, depending upon the weather and the groups input.

-->Feel free to bring your favorite blanket and/ or meditation cushion (zafu). These are outdoors, so sunscreen and comfortable clothing may be needed due to the hot sun. I hope you can stay for the entire meditation, but it is understandable & OK if that doesn't work for you. =)

Ankle progress & Peace Meditation

Posted on Sep 21st, 2007 by Risto : Peace Voyager Risto
My ankle is healing quite rapidly... thanks to lots of Healing Energies it's receiving both from me and others --thnx!!!-- It's still swollen, just not as bad, and I still have a slight limp when I walk, but most of the pain has diminished, except when I try to sit in Lotus Position, so I don't sit like that right now. I 'held space' for 3 separate Peace Meditations today 21 September, the Int'l Day of Peace. Although nobody appeared in person, the meditation went on, and I felt an amazing Energy at the 11 am meditation. All we are saying is Give Peace a Chance. Imagine all the people living life in peace. Namasté ☮ ∞ Risto ∞ ☯

Paranoia in Boston, again

Posted on Sep 21st, 2007 by Risto : Peace Voyager Risto
OK, this convinces to *never* go to Boston. Sorry Bostonians, but the gov't/police there is just out of touch.

I remember just this past January (2007) when Cartoon Network did some creative marketing for their program "Aqua Teen Hunger Force", and Boston officials again panicked. Other major cities that had the same marketing unknowingly placed in those cities said the devices have been in place for two to three weeks in 10 cities: Boston, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta, Seattle, Portland, Ore., Austin, Texas, San Francisco and Philadelphia. But none overreacted as Boston did.

So, my conservative Bostonians, I will not come there and spend my $$, due to the local gov't that over-reacts to artistic expressions using harmless electronic components.

By GLEN JOHNSON, Associated Press Writer 2 minutes ago
BOSTON - An MIT student wearing what turned out to be a fake bomb was arrested at gunpoint Friday at Logan International Airport and later claimed it was artwork, officials said.

Star Simpson, 19, had a computer circuit board and wiring in plain view over a black hooded sweatshirt she was wearing, said State Police Maj. Scott Pare, the commanding officer at the airport.

"She said that it was a piece of art and she wanted to stand out on career day," Pare said at a news conference. "She claims that it was just art, and that she was proud of the art and she wanted to display it."

Simpson was charged with disturbing the peace and possessing a hoax device. A not guilty plea was entered for her and she was released on $750 bail.

During the hearing, Simpson smiled as she entered wearing a T-shirt and sandals. After she posted bail, she left in a taxi with a man who identified himself as her boyfriend, but neither would answer more questions from reporters.

Prosecutor Wayne Margolis had requested $5,000 bail, saying Simpson showed a total disregard for the situation she was in — an airport after the 2001 terrorist attacks.

Ross Schreiber, who was appointed to represent Simpson, said she was not a risk to flee, was a good student with no prior convictions and she cooperated with authorities.

He said she had gone to the airport to meet her boyfriend. "She was there for legitimate purposes," Schreiber said.

Simpson was "extremely lucky she followed the instructions or deadly force would have been used," Pare said. "She's lucky to be in a cell as opposed to the morgue."

Simpson is a Massachusetts Institute of Technology sophomore from Hawaii, officials said.

The battery-powered rectangular device had nine flashing lights, and Simpson had Play-Doh in her hands, Pare said.

The phrases "Socket to me" and "Course VI" were written on the back of her sweatshirt, which authorities displayed to the media. Course VI appears to refer to MIT's major of electrical engineering and computer science.

Simpson was a member of MIT's swimming and diving team in 2006, according to the team's Web site, which lists her hometown as Kihei, Hawaii. MIT spokeswoman Patti Richards said aside from confirming she was a student, the school did not have any comment.

She was arrested about 8 a.m. outside Terminal C, home to United Airlines, Jet Blue and other carriers.

A Massachusetts Port Authority staffer manning an information booth in the terminal became suspicious when Simpson — wearing the device — approached to ask about an incoming flight, Pare said. Simpson then walked outside, and the staffer notified a nearby trooper.

The trooper, joined by others with submachine guns, confronted her at a traffic island in front of the terminal.

"She was immediately told to stop, to raise her hands and not to make any movement, so we could observe all her movements to see if she was trying to trip any type of device," Pare said. "Had she not followed the protocol, we might have used deadly force."

Pare said Simpson took a subway to the airport, but he was not sure if she had the device on at that time.

The major praised the booth attendant, but said the incident is a reminder of the terrorism threat confronting the civil aviation system. Two of the four passenger jets hijacked on Sept. 11, 2001, took off from Logan.

The city was the focus of a major security scare Jan. 31 when dozens of battery-powered devices were discovered in various locations. Bomb squads were deployed and some transportation links were closed temporarily. They turned out to be a promotion for the Cartoon Network.
